Are Vet prescribed foods bad?…actually they are worse than most commercial pet foods and most of these are terrible as well…so that is saying a lot! If you want to see a pet food for it really is you need to look at the ingredient list from the perspective of a Holistic Vet or Nutritionist…Below I’ve taken random examples from Hills and Royal Canin foods…yes the foods your Vet prescribed. And yet these are some of the WORST foods you can feed. Why?
Firstly they are FULL of GMO GRAINS…they use them because they are CHEAP not because they are good for your pet. Most of the food here is made for pennies but you will pay prime dollar for it because so many people down the chain are making lots of money on it…but it is mostly cheap grain fillers, poor protein sources and very SMALL amounts of any good whole food ingredients. The little bit of broccoli that may make it in the bag is probably less than a handful for a full bag – fact is the meat portion of it doesn’t fare much better…if you can find any in some of these formulas at all. Some are just pork fat and corn!!! Who can live off that?
Weight formulas with CARBS? the only thing these foods do is provide so little actual food that it is just calorie restriction but not much else. Dogs and cats are fat from getting things like corn, rice and other starches and grains and above all else are being fed GMO’s …because GMO’s cause inflammation and are brimming with pesticides! Your cat or dog can never truly be a healthy weight on these kinds of foods not unless they are starved but they won’t be healthy!
I want you to look at the ingredient list for the foods below. Notice all of them have GMO CORN, SOY, BEET PULP (why the heck do cats and dogs need beet pulp – they can’t digest it…it is just a filler), some foods have CANOLA another GMO…these are not safe foods!
So let’s look at some of the formulas below…
Hills Science Diet – Weight formula for dogs
Chicken, Cracked Pearled Barley, Brown Rice, Pea Bran Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken Meal, Tomato Pomace, Oat Fiber, Chicken Liver Flavor, Flaxseed, Dried Beet Pulp, Coconut Oil, Lactic Acid, Pork Liver Flavor, Dried Carrots, Iodized Salt,Natural Flavors, Apples, Broccoli, Cranberries, Green Peas.
So this one lists chicken as the first ingredient…so one would think this bag contains first chicken as its ingredient as it is supposed to be listed from highest to lowest in terms of content…well here lies the problem…the chicken here is weighed raw first so is mostly water so in fact if it as weighed appropriately AFTER it was cooked it would be a MUCH further down on the list…so there isn’t as much chicken in this one as one may think. What you should be seeing as the first ingredient is Barley and Rice…then CORN. Also chicken flavor is chemicals and more often than not it is actually MSG! Yup the same stuff you are trying to avoid in Chinese food that is linked to health problems, allergies and OBESITY is in this pet food! Flax seeds…may seem like a great idea BUT they are heated to high temps and exposed to air…making them carcinogenic (cancer causing) so this ingredient went quickly from a plus to a minus.
Even the few fruits and veggies…do you know they make up a VERY small portion of this food?
Let’s move on to the next one…
Hills for Food Sensitivities/Itchy skin for dogs
Corn Starch, Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver, Powdered Cellulose, Soybean Oil, Iodized Salt, vitamins Natural Flavors
For dog’s with sensitivities and itchy skin the LAST thing you want to feed is CORN and other GMO ingredients…as they can be the actual cause!
Hills for Cats – Urinary Care
Chicken, Whole Grain Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Grain Wheat, Brewers Rice, Pork Fat, Chicken Meal, Egg Product, Pork Flavor, Soybean Oil, Fish Oil,
Look at all the grains in this…Cat food should not have ANY starchy carbs especially genetically modified grains…this is literally setting them up for health problems such as chronic GI problems (ie. vomiting), allergies and including early kidney failure…the list goes on and on. Again the pork flavor or MSG…this is not good quality ingredients.
Royal Canin for Cats – Digestive Care
Brewer’s rice, wheat gluten, chicken meal, chicken fat, corn gluten meal, soy protein isolate, wheat, natural flavors, corn, chicory, fish oil, calcium sulfate, vegetable oil,
This one is mainly grains…lots of allergenic foods here…definitely not good for digestion.
Royal Canin for Dogs – Joint and Coat Care
Chicken by-product meal, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, brown rice, chicken fat, wheat, natural flavors, dried beet pulp, fish oil, vegetable oil,
Much of the joint issues today are allergy/auto-immune related and low grade inflammation from poor foods/toxins…this food is actually contributing to this not fixing it.
Clients come to me asking for help with their pets health issues and most of them have been on these foods with little to no help…or they get worse. As soon as we tailor their diet needs to actual REAL whole foods and supplements they miraculously start to get better with that alone!
There’s an old saying…garbage in, garbage out…till these big pet food companies stop feeding our pets garbage we need to steer clear if we want healthy pets!
